Defence Secretary John Healey has clarified that the UK's defence spending boost is not being done specifically for Donald Trump.
Speaking on GB News, Healey responded to questions about whether the increase was "done for Donald Trump" with a firm denial.
However, he acknowledged that the US president had "issued the challenge to the UK and other European nations in the last two weeks".
Healey explained the boost comes because "we made the commitment and we've recognised for some time the world is changing".

"We face a new era of threats and we need to forge a new era of defence in Britain to keep us safe," he said.
The Defence Secretary emphasised the importance of making Britain "stronger in our alliances" and deterring adversaries.

He noted that Trump had "reinforced the imperative and importance" of increasing defence spending.
Healey revealed he had briefed the US Defence Secretary on the announcement, who described it as "a strong step from an enduring partner".
The Defence Secretary said this provides "a good basis for Keir Starmer to discuss with President Trump" how Britain and European allies will increase their commitments.
These discussions would cover "defence spending, on Ukraine, but also to reinforce our defence industry for the long term".

Healey added these were "all aims that the US share".
When asked about defence threats, Healey identified Russia as the primary concern.
"The first focus is Ukraine. We have a full-scale war in Europe as a result of Putin's invasion," he stated.
He warned that "if Putin prevails in Ukraine, he won't stop".
This assessment underpins Britain's approach to Ukraine's defence.
"That's why the first line of UK defence is in Ukraine," Healey explained, highlighting Britain's "strong commitment" and "UK leadership".
