NextImg:Travis Kelce issues apology after NFL star sparked backlash with criticism

Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce has changed his tune about the team's season opener in São Paulo, Brazil, after initially expressing frustration about the conditions.

The tight end had voiced concerns about playing in the heat and humidity during an earlier episode of his New Heights podcast, which he co-hosts with his brother Jason.

"I'll be there, not to do a podcast. I'll be playing football in the heat," Kelce had said about the 5 September match against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Temperatures in Brazil are expected to be in the 80s, but Kelce was particularly worried about the humidity making for what he called a "miserable" environment.

Having spent his entire career with the Chiefs, Kelce has clearly grown to prefer colder playing conditions.

"I will say this, if it's humid, I'm gonna be miserable," the Kansas City Chiefs star said.

"If it's hot and humid, and it's kind a what I'm expecting, I'm going to be miserable but we're going to find a way to get a win."

The star tight end compared the potential conditions to those in Florida. "I've been in Jacksonville in September, and that's [expletive] miserable," he remarked.

Kelce also joked about his physical attributes contributing to his heat concerns. "I'm a furry son of a [expletive] me and heat just don't do well together."

In the latest episode of his podcast, however, Kelce has softened his stance and offered an apology for his initial comments.

"I apologise if it came off as that I'm not excited about this," he said. "I'm still excited, I'm just going to be doing some wardrobe changes throughout the game."

The Chiefs star expressed enthusiasm about the international fixture.

"Can't wait to get down there and see all the Brazil fans and how they get rocking for some American football," Kelce added.

"Sign me up! Don't get me wrong, I love playing in Arrowhead and I love playing in America, but I'm down for at least one or two international games."

While Kelce has resolved his weather concerns, his brother Jason highlighted another potential issue with the Brazil fixture. The former Philadelphia Eagles centre warned about the playing surface at the São Paulo venue.

"The field was atrocious last year," Jason said. "It was noticeably bad; they were slipping all over the place. It was a bad field."

Jason's comments were based on the Eagles' experience at the same venue last season against the Green Bay Packers.

There may be a silver lining, however. The Eagles went on to win the Super Bowl after beginning their season in Brazil, a fate the Chiefs will hope to replicate.

The key advice for Travis? "Remember to hydrate."
