A trans inmate has won a complaint after being unable to order a pair of size 10 women's shoes at a men's prison.

The unusual case was one of several successful grievances uncovered through a Freedom of Information request examining complaints made to the watchdog between 2023 and 2024.

In another case, a deaf inmate received a refund for a TV without subtitles, despite using the set primarily for gaming.

A third inmate won a complaint after being served porridge without milk at weekends.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman ruled against jail bosses for providing only water with breakfast oats on Saturdays and Sundays.

An £8.22 reimbursement was granted to another prisoner who challenged being charged for a replacement kettle.

The FOI probe revealed the watchdog upheld 21 complaints over a one-year period, The Sun has revealed.

Nine of these successful grievances related to accommodation issues.

A further eight complaints concerned equality matters.

Four upheld cases involved food-related disputes.

Kevin Moore, retired Detective Chief Superintendent and former Head of CID at Sussex Police, condemned the rulings.

He told The Sun: "As someone whose job it was to keep serious criminals off the street in order to keep the public safe, this makes my blood boil."

Moore added: "This is just so typical of today's 'woke' society now impacting on the so-called rights of prisoners who are supposed to be locked up as a punishment."

"I accept that prisoners have rights but to me, this is stretching these to the limits."
