Three people have been injured after a car crashed into a hospital building in Devon.

Emergency services soon rushed to the scene at Torbay Hospital in Torquay to attend to the three victims, two of whom were left trapped underneath the vehicle.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 10.47am today reporting that a vehicle had collided with a cabin at Torbay Hospital, Torquay and there were reports of people trapped.

"Four crews from Torquay and Paignton fire stations were dispatched.

"On arrival the driver was already free and clear but two people were trapped under the car."

Authorities have said that crews lifted the vehicle so that both casualties could be released and assessed by paramedics.

However, it has been confirmed that crews have remained to help partners and ensure that the area is safe.

Police have confirmed that the hospital has stayed open.

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust said: "There has been a road traffic incident at Torbay Hospital. Emergency services are on site.

"The entrance to the site at Caldwell Lane is temporarily closed and a number of traffic diversions are in place to support emergency services to manage the incident.

"At least one car park is closed. Our traffic officers are onsite to direct people to alternative parking.

"People who are due to attend appointments onsite today are encouraged to use public transport wherever possible and to allow extra time for their journey."

The Trust has requested for people to avoid speculation or to post images online, saying that they wish to prioritise the privacy and safety of those involved.
