A teenager has been charged with murder after a 16-year-old was stabbed to death at a train station on Thursday.

The accused, also aged 16, has also been charged with possession of a bladed article, and is scheduled to appear before Brighton Magistrates' Court on Friday.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers were called to the scene at Seaford station in East Sussex at around 5pm on Wednesday after reports of a stabbing.

In a media statement outside the station on Thursday afternoon, BTP Superintendent Dominique Ioannou said: "I want to begin by expressing our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the teenage boy who tragically lost his life here at Seaford station yesterday evening."

He later added: "His family are being support by specially trained officers, and we would ask their privacy is respected as they come to terms with this terrible news.

"We understand that this news will also be incredibly distressing for the local community.

"Please be assured that British Transport Police have launched a full investigation and are working closely with colleagues including Sussex Police to establish exactly what happened."

He also thanked locals for their patience and understanding, while warning there would be an increased police presence as the investigation continues.

The victim was died at the scene where he had been found with serious injuries from stab wounds.

It is being treated as an isolated incident, and the Superintendent confirmed police are not looking for anyone else.

Mayor of Seaford Maggie Wearmouth said she was "shocked and saddened bu the tragic loss of a young life", and thanked "all those in the emergency services who were involved".

MP for Lewes James MacCleary said: "My thoughts are with the family of the young man whose life has been cut so short."
