Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton could face uncertain futures in the Ryder Cup despite playing crucial roles in Europe’s latest triumph at Bethpage Black.
Both men are still in dispute with the DP World Tour after joining the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League ahead of the 2024 season. Their participation in New York was only possible due to ongoing appeals against fines and sanctions, which gave them temporary eligibility for selection.
The appeals process remains unresolved, leaving questions over whether Rahm and Hatton will feature when Europe attempt to win a third straight Ryder Cup in 2027.
Rahm, when asked about his appeal against the DP World Tour, said: “You know as much as I do. I have no idea. I have no clue. To be fair, I completely forgot about it, which is a good thing. I hope I forget about it until it happens.”

There are hopes Captain Luke Donald will return for that campaign, and given the strong bond within the team, it is highly likely he would want both players at his disposal.
The Spaniard has refused to settle the penalties imposed on him, confident his place in the Ryder Cup will not be jeopardised. For now, he remains focused on celebrating Europe’s back-to-back victories, having once again been one of the standout performers for Donald’s team.
During the foursomes, Rahm delivered one of the most memorable shots of the competition when he holed a remarkable chip from the rough on the eighth hole.
Reflecting on Europe’s victory, the world No3 reserved special praise for his captain. “There’s so many things that Luke has done outstandingly, professionally [that are] so perfect that it’s hard to say one [thing],” Rahm explained.

“Without getting too much into it, the level of professionalism he’s shown us the last four years, his attention to detail and his poise, and his knowledge of the Ryder Cup and the game and what we do on the golf course day-in-and-day-out has made these last two Ryder Cups possible.
“He’s the captain of this ship, and he’s led us better than I can see anybody leading us. He’s set the bar extremely high for future captains.”

The DP World Tour has already taken a hard line against players who defected to LIV Golf, with Sergio García, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter among those fined and suspended.
Hatton’s situation mirrors Rahm’s, with the fiery Englishman also contesting his fines. He was one of Europe’s most consistent performers across the weekend and has become a reliable figure in the Ryder Cup set-up.

His future, like Rahm’s, will hinge on the outcome of his appeal and the DP World Tour’s stance on LIV players in the coming years.
What is clear, however, is the importance both men hold within Donald’s team. Europe’s victory at Bethpage Black underlined their ability to perform under pressure, and their presence could prove crucial in extending Europe’s dominance when the Ryder Cup heads to Ireland in 2027.
