Taxpayers have been funding "mother tongue" language lessons for second and third generation immigrations to learn foreign languages such as Somali and Bengali in Tower Hamlets.

Over £27,000 has been forked out to fund community language sessions for young people and families in the deprived East London borough.

One of the "mother tongue" projects provides out of school Bengali language classes and cultural activities for young people "to boost their confidence".

A total of three sessions from the project run every week in school terms, costing the taxpayer £2,000.

Some sixty per cent of school children in Tower Hamlets speak a language other than English, one of the highest in London.

Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice previously said: "After 14 years of total Tory failure on immigration, the chickens have come home to roost.

"Opening the floodgates to millions of new people has made integration into the British way of life almost impossible, and these statistics are testament to that.

"This is not only a cultural problem, but also piles extra pressure on public services, including the NHS, forcing them to fork out millions on translators which could be better spent on frontline staff."
