NextImg:Spotify confirms price rise for millions worldwide, here's how much extra you'll need to pay

Your monthly Spotify Premium subscription will increase by £1 next month.

The music streaming giant announced today that subscription costs will rise from £10.99 to £11.99 per month in the UK, as well as mainland Europe, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific regions.

If you're impacted by the price hike — which equates to an extra £12 each year — you'll be contacted by Spotify via email in the next few weeks. Unless you cancel, your subscription will automatically switch to the new, higher price when your September billing cycle comes around.

New subscribers to Spotify Premium will need to pay the new £11.99 per month fee from today (August 4).

Spotify says it's having to charge Premium subscribers more to "continue to innovate on product offerings and features".

The £1 monthly increase is the latest in a series of price changes for Spotify users across the globe. Earlier this year, subscribers in the Netherlands and Luxembourg experienced an 18% jump to €12.99 monthly, while Belgian users saw a more modest 9% rise to €11.99.

But in the United States, prices will remain unchanged. Spotify Premium increased to $11.99 monthly in 2023 after 12 years of remaining unchanged. Chief Executive Daniel Ek recently addressed pricing strategy during a recent earnings call, emphasising the company's preference for maintaining subscriber loyalty over pursuing immediate revenue gains.

There are five different Spotify subscription options available:

While Spotify remains one of the only music streaming services that offers a free plan, it's severely limited. You'll need to switch to Spotify Premium if you want to listen to your favourite artists and albums ad-free, with the abilty to skip any tracks you don't like and the freedom to download tracks for offline play.

Spotify Premium also boasts a limited number of audiobooks, so you can stream the latest bestsellers alongside your favourite music and podcasts.

With the latest price rise, a subscription to Spotify Premium is now more expensive than an individual plan at Apple Music, Amazon Music (with a Prime Subscription), YouTube Music, and Tidal, which all start from £10.99 per month. An individual subscription to Deezer is the same price as Spotify at £11.99.

Apple Music subscribers get ad-free access to over 100 million songs, curated playlists, and live radio. They can download music for offline listening, enjoy high-quality lossless and spatial audio, and get personalised recommendations.

The announcement arrives as Spotify seeks to enhance its margins following a disappointing earnings forecast last month, despite the company's shares climbing nearly 40% since January this year.

The company saw an increase in monthly active users and Spotify Premium subscribers during the second quarter, but higher taxes related to employee salaries led it to post a loss during the period.

It's a blow for the Swedish streamer, which only managed to achieve its first annual profit last year.
