NextImg:'Speak English!' Patrick Christys scolds Emmanuel Macron for 'not giving UK courtesy' at the King's State Banquet

Patrick Christys has brutally scolded Emmanuel Macron for "not bothering to speak English" at tonight's state banquet at Windsor Castle.

The criticism came as Macron paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II during the formal dinner, with much of his address delivered in French rather than English.

Patrick interrupted his live coverage on Patrick Christys Tonight when Macron began speaking in French, cutting away from the speech entirely.

After cutting away, Patrick said: "Okay, I'm just going to come in now because Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, doesn’t appear to be doing anyone the courtesy of actually bothering to speak in English. So we’ll wait and take it if he does, bearing in mind he’s fluent.

"And of course, he’s currently at Windsor Castle next to the King, who did make the effort to speak a little French. It might have been quite nice of Macron to return the gesture. But when, or if, he starts speaking English again, we’ll go back to it."

Editor-at-Large at the Mail, Charlotte Griffiths, said: "I'd really like to be able to say I was fluent in French, I understood every word.

"I actually don't think Charles did, though, because of course, when Charles speaks in French he's reading from cue cards.

"I thought he struggled a little with it. And I did wonder, is he understanding any of this? Because he can speak French, but he's not really fluent."

Macron's address followed a toast from the King and included tributes to Queen Elizabeth II, with the French President telling King Charles that France had "real affection for your mother".

He expressed his belief that this feeling was "reciprocal" and noted that "she was your queen, to us she was 'The Queen'".

The French President covered similar themes to his earlier parliamentary speech, which had been delivered in English.

He referenced the King's earlier suggestion of developing an "entente amicale" or "friendly agreement" to build upon the existing "entente cordiale" between the two nations.

However, after these initial remarks, Macron transitioned into French for the remainder of his speech to the assembled diners at Windsor Castle.

Earlier in the evening, King Charles had delivered his own speech at Windsor Castle, addressing the complexities of UK-France relations during Macron's state visit.

The King acknowledged the challenges both nations face together, including "irregular migration" between the two countries.

Charles spoke of how the two nations must work in partnership to address threats that "know no borders", emphasising that "no fortress can protect us against them this time".

He described the relationship as built on "cooperation and mutual fascination but also on amicable competition and occasionally even, dare I say, confusion."
