NextImg:SNP Minister forced to QUIT after 'assaulting' Douglas Ross in Parliament

Scottish Government minister Jamie Hepburn has resigned after being accused of "physically assaulting" Conservative MSP Douglas Ross.

The former Tory leader says Parliamentary Business Minister Jamie Hepburn attacked him as he left the chamber on Wednesday, after the pair clashed over the scheduling of a summit on what Mr Ross called “out of control” seagulls.

Mr Hepburn admits he put a hand on Ross’s shoulder and “used a few choice words”, but insists that was the extent of it.

Police Scotland say they have spoken to Mr Ross about the accusation, however no official complaint has been made.

Mr Hepburn told reporters: "I will freely fess up to things I've done, but I will not apologise for things I've not done.

"I am clearly sorry I conducted myself in the fashion that I did and I recognise that I let myself down but that is the extent of it.

"Some of what has been suggested does not tally with the reality."

Mr Hepburn refused confirm to reporters he had broken the ministerial code, or if the First Minister still has confidence in him.

First Minister of Scotland John Swinney posted on X: "I have accepted Jamie Hepburn’s resignation as Minister for Parliamentary Business.

"I thank him for his many years of service across Government, his support to me, and his tireless work on behalf of the people of Scotland."

He also posted a copy of his response to Mr Hepburn after he received his resignation.
