Lib Dems leader Sir Ed Davey has paid tribute to the fallen veterans on the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Speaking to reporters, Davey said: "It's critical we remember them and that we pass that memory on to our children and young people. It was a most important moment in our country's history, and I think the world's history.

"It was a fight for freedom, a fight for democracy. If those brave men and women hadn't fought that day and gone into those beaches, we might not be having the election. We might not have the freedoms we enjoy.

"That's how important it is. And so we must remember them and thank them."
