NextImg:Scottie Scheffler gives emotional speech about wife and family after winning CJ Cup Byron Nelson

Scottie Scheffler struggled to contain his emotions after his victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson tournament on Sunday.

The World No 1 choked back tears during an on-course interview with CBS' Amanda Balionis.

Scheffler, after composing himself, then hammered home the significance of his victory - with the 28-year-old paying tribute to his wife, Meredith.

"When I think about this tournament, I think about a lot of different stuff," Scheffler said.

"I grew up coming to watch it. This was my first start on the PGA Tour when I was in high school.

"The girl I was dating at the time is now my wife. We have one son. My sister was caddying for me at the time. She was here today. She has two kids.

"My family was all able to be here, and it was just really, really special memories, and I think at times it all comes crashing down to me at once."

Scheffler made history on Sunday with a dominant wire-to-wire victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

The American tied the PGA Tour 72-hole scoring record of 253, a mark previously set by Justin Thomas and Ludvig Aberg.

He finished the tournament at an astonishing 31-under par.

The victory represented Scheffler's 14th career win on the PGA Tour, moving him ahead of fellow American Jordan Spieth on the all-time list.

For the two-time Masters champion, the achievement went beyond mere statistics.

"I never really got this far to be honest with you. I always just dreamed of playing golf on the PGA Tour," Scheffler reflected.

Scheffler's dominance was evident throughout the tournament as he finished eight shots ahead of his nearest competitor, Erik van Rooyen.

The victory was particularly special as it came in what Scheffler considers his hometown area.

Though born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, Scheffler moved to Dallas, Texas with his family when he was six years old.

He grew up in the area and attended Highland Park High School in Dallas.

The tournament is held at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, approximately 30 miles outside of Dallas.

"I would come out on the driving range and watch these guys practice, hitting their brand-new range balls," Scheffler recalled of his childhood visits to the tournament.

Scheffler's victory truly represented a homecoming for the world's best golfer.

"That's all I wanted to do was come out here and play a golf course that was in great shape and compete on the best golf courses in the world against the best players," he said.

The emotional significance of winning in front of family and childhood friends was evident throughout his post-victory comments.

Following his historic performance, Scheffler will take next week's Truist Championship off.

This break will allow him to prepare for the season's second major tournament, the PGA Championship.

The World No 1 will be among the favourites as he continues his remarkable 2025 season.
