NextImg:Rory McIlroy astonishes golf fans with 'shot of the Masters' as star targets Augusta triumph

Rory McIlroy has produced a moment of magic at Augusta National that could finally deliver his long-awaited Green Jacket.

The 35-year-old, holding a three-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau through six holes of the final round, faced a seemingly impossible situation on the par-4 7th.

With his ball positioned directly behind several towering trees, McIlroy somehow launched a spectacular shot over the obstacles from 153 yards out.

The ball landed less than 10 feet from the hole.

"Arnold Palmer would've been proud of this one," remarked CBS commentator Frank Nobilo as McIlroy beamed with delight.

The Northern Irishman's incredible escape could prove pivotal in his quest for Masters glory.

The remarkable shot sent social media into a frenzy as golf fans shared their amazement.

"Through this gap... are you kidding?" wrote one stunned user.

The moment could prove decisive as McIlroy pursues the one major championship that has eluded him throughout his illustrious career.

His smile after executing the shot revealed just how significant it might be in his quest for Masters glory.

Speaking before the final round, McIlroy had discussed his approach to handling the pressure.

'I think the thing is to not make it a rematch,' he said.

He emphasised his plan to 'stay in his own world' and block out the noise from Augusta's patrons.

'I think I still have to remind myself that there's a long way to go, just like I said yesterday, 18 holes,' McIlroy added.

'I know what can happen on the final day here. I've got a lot of experience.

'I came in here talking about being the most complete version of myself as a golfer, and I just have to keep reminding myself of that.'

Should McIlroy maintain his lead, he would complete the career Grand Slam that has tantalizingly eluded him since his last major victory.
