NextImg:Riot police separate protesters and counter protesters as 'fireworks thrown' in Belfast clashes

Riot police have swarmed in to separate protesters and counter protesters as fireworks have been thrown during clashes in Belfast.

Anti-immigration protesters have gathered in protest in the Northern Ireland capital, in similar fashion to other towns and cities across the UK.

In rather surprising scenes however, protesters carrying both Union Jack flags and the Tricolour have been pictured marching together in the anti-immigration rally.

Anti-racist counter protesters have also gathered around the area, with the situation quickly escalating between the two groups.

There have been reports of fireworks and other projectiles being thrown between the two groups in the city centre, as the numbers attending both rallies grow.

Police officers wearing riot gear have tried to separate the groups and restore order, using land rovers to break up the masses.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) spokesperson said: "The Police Service of Northern Ireland is aware of several planned protests across Northern Ireland today and will be in attendance to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

"Officers will remain in the area and continue to monitor the situation.

"Road users are advised that College Square East and Wellington Place are currently closed due to ongoing protest activity in the area.

"Please seek an alternative route for your journey. An update will be provided in due course."
