Over 100 people have been arrested across the UK for supporting Palestine Action, after the group was proscribed as a terrorist organisation.

In total, 105 protesters were held under the Terrorism Act 2000, the highest number since the group's proscription.

Most of the arrests came in Central London, where 55 people were arrested in Parliament Square, with an additional nine on a separate Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) march in Westminster.

At the PSC march, another person was arrested after allegedly chanting "death to the IDF", which became a prominent phrase from the Bob Vylan performance at Glastonbury.

A further 17 people were arrested in Bristol, 16 in Manchester and eight in Truro, Cornwall, under the terrorism laws.

Police officers moved in within five minutes to detain the individuals holding placards reading: "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action."

One of the oldest protesters to be held under terrorism laws was 80-year-old Irena Frick, who said it was the first time she had been arrested.

Frick said: "I have two granddaughters and I want them to grow up in a free society."

There were counter-protests taking place too

The protest at Parliament Square was organised by Defend Our Juries, who have held actions in London for three successive Saturdays since the Government ban.

Some 70 people were arrested at the two previous demonstrations in the capital.

Protesters yesterday in London were met by a dozen pro-Israel activists who held up placards stating: "There is no genocide. But there are 50 hostages still captive."

Photos of Palestine Action protesters in Edinburgh were also posted; however, no arrests were made.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "We were made aware of images circulating online showing individuals displaying signs expressing support for a proscribed organisation in the Parliament Square area of Edinburgh. Officers attended; however, no one was present. Enquiries are ongoing."

An 81-year-old was arrested outside Truro Cathedral, as two men and six women were "arrested on suspicion of offences under Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000".

Commenting on the situation in Bristol, Avon and Somerset Police said 17 people had been arrested.

The force wrote: "We will always aim to enable peaceful protest; however, where criminal offences are committed, including those related to proscribed groups, we will intervene."
