Chancellor Rachel Reeves has sparked a fiery sexism row on GB News, as ex-Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng claimed Reeves's tears during PMQ's meant she was "stressed" about her job.

Reeves sparked concern after appearing to shed tears during her appearance in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

Following the session, No11 confirmed that Reeves appeared upset due to a "personal matter".

A spokesman said: "It’s a personal matter, which - as you would expect - we are not going to get into. The Chancellor will be working out of Downing Street this afternoon."

Discussing the Chancellor's upset on GB News, commentator Scarlett Mccgwire defended Reeves, telling host Nigel Farage and Kwasi Kwarteng that it was "not a sign of weakness".

As Nigel claimed Reeves is "not up to the job", Mccgwire hit back: "I think this has got nothing to do with that, Nigel. I just think that something happened, we have no idea what, and we have no idea why.

"She was upset, sometimes things get away from us. It's got nothing to do with her being Chancellor."

Weighing in on the debate, Kwarteng then argued: "There's more going on. She was supposed to have a welfare bill that was blown out of the water, frankly, she's got to find £5billion more in the autumn budget, and she'll probably have to raise taxes.

"There's been huge pressure. There would have been ringing MPs every hour at the weekend saying, please, please, please vote for the Government, that's stressful. You're on the call to close parliamentary colleagues, they're saying, we're not going to vote for you, it's been a very stressful time."

As Nigel interjected that Reeves looked "terrible" during the incident, Mccgwire snapped back: "It was only tears, she didn't make a fuss, she just had a tear rolling down her face. And that means she's not up to the job? I just think this is crazy."

Nigel then stated: "Her record is dire, she lied about her CV, she's not qualified to do the job."

Recalling his own experience as Chancellor, Kwarteng then told GB News: "I'm trying to be as compassionate and fair to her as possible, because of course, what she's been through is incredibly difficult.

"And actually, all of her predecessors have been through similar moments, and you've got to keep it together, and the fact that she didn't says to me there's a wider problem within the Government, her relationship with the Prime Minister. Is that unfair?"

Mccgwire then fumed: "Yes it is unfair, you have no idea about her! But because you're a man, you didn't cry when she sacked you. What I'm saying is the fact that she didn't make a fuss, the fact that a tear rolled down her cheek somehow makes her weak, I don't think it's a sign of weakness. I think it's a real shame."

As Nigel suggested that "maybe it's a symptom of what has become a pretty dysfunctional Government", Kwarteng agreed, telling Mccgwire: "And with the endless U-turns, they would have had a very stressful week."

Mccgwire hit back: "You talk to me about a dysfunctional Government, you were in one, you were Chancellor!"

Kwarteng then interjected "but I never cried!", to which Mccgwire concluded: "That's great - maybe it would have helped if you had!"
