"His Majesty has known President Trump for many years and looks forward to hosting him and the First Lady later this year," a Palace aide said.

An official announcement of the State Visit in June followed a preliminary invitation given to Mr Trump in March by the Prime Minister on behalf of the King.

The visit was later confirmed after a hand delivered "Manu Regia" invitation was delivered to the White House from representatives at Britain's Washington embassy.

The letter was a hand-signed invitation from King Charles to President Trump.
