More than 1,000 asylum seekers have crossed the English Channel already in 2024, with the numbers largely mirroring the figures for the first month of 2023 - so, today we're asking: Is Britain's asylum system broken?

Despite Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's vow to "stop the boats", large numbers of those seeking to come to the UK are continuing to make the treacherous journey across the Dover Strait.

Questions have also been raised about how people can claim asylum in the UK after the man alleged to have carried out the chemical attack on a woman and two children in Clapham on Wednesday was granted right to remain in Britain.

Abdul Ezedi was reject asylum pn his initial application before then claiming to have converted to Christianity on his second attempt. He then received an endorsement from a priest on his third application in order to get his right to remain approved.

Yesterday former Home Secretary Suella Braverman criticised the decision to grant asylum to Ezedi.

"Spurious claims based on religion are commonplace in our asylum system. The bar is low, it’s easy to game the system," she said.

"Hard headed measures are needed if we are to control our borders & keep the British people safe."

Do you think Britain's asylum system is broken? Have your say above.
