The UK's Eurovision act, Olly Alexander, has faced backlash prior to his appearance at the song contest, due to his views on the Union Jack flag.

Speaking to the Big Issue, Alexander said: "I too have an ambivalent relationship with the Union Jack and what that represents to people, because it can feel divisive, it can feel nationalist.

"But it can also feel like a representation of what’s good about the UK and what makes it good… the inclusivity, the diversity.

"I am choosing to focus on those aspects of what I believe being in the UK has given me, in my upbringing as well."

Some questioned why he was representing the UK in the show despite him admitting he felt "ambivalent" towards the flag.

Former Eurovision winner Cheryl Baker was one of those who slammed him.

The Bucks Fizz shared her thoughts on the comments recently and seemed to agree with the criticism.

Speaking to the Daily Express, the Eurovision legend stated: "The flag thing - I think that's a bit daft because, you know, a flag is exactly that - it's bringing together countries."

She continued: "I think that was a bit silly. He probably regrets it."
