A man has been shot by police officers in Merseyside following a double stabbing.

Emergency services were called to Huyton, where the found two people injured in the Tobruk road area.

Police have now confirmed that the suspect has been taken to hospital after being shot by officers, as neighbours reported hearing a number of gunshots fired.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "At around 4.25pm, we received a report that a man and woman had been stabbed in the Tobruk Road area.

"Armed response officers attended and the suspect was subsequently shot by police.

"He has been taken to hospital for treatment. An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of the incident and the road has been cordoned off.

"Officers remain at the scene and are carrying out house-to-house and CCTV inquiries."

Detective Superintendent Paul Speight explained that this "was an isolated incident", and the police are "not looking for anyone else".

Speight said: "I know that people who live in this area of Huyton and the wider communities of Merseyside will be shocked by this incident.

"We are still in the very early stages of investigating, and part of our initial inquiries will be to establish the full circumstances of what happened. In the meantime, I want to reassure the public that Merseyside Police is committed to keeping our communities safe, and we take all reports of incidents involving weapons extremely seriously.

"The IOPC will now conduct an independent investigation, and we will be co-operating fully with their investigation in the coming days and weeks."
