Police in Bradford have launched a murder probe after a teenager died following a large-scale "street fight" with "bladed weapons" near a mosque.

West Yorkshire Police said officers had made four arrests after the "very serious incident" - which the force said involved a "number of men fighting in the street" on the city's Bowling Old Lane.

One man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and three men have been arrested on suspicion of offences including affray.

A 19-year-old man died at the scene despite emergency services' best efforts, police added.

DCI Dan Bates, of West Yorkshire Police's homicide and major enquiry team, who is leading the investigation, said: "A full investigation is ongoing into what has clearly been a very serious incident which has resulted in a young man losing his life.

"A number of initial arrests have been made and we are appealing for witnesses and information, as we work to determine the full circumstances of what took place.

"We will have a number of police scenes in place over the course of the evening and uniformed officers will also be patrolling to reassure residents.

"Colleagues from Bradford District’s Stronger Communities Team are also working to liaise with partners in communities."

One nearby resident told the Telegraph and Argus: "We heard the helicopter then saw it was all cordoned off... It's a shock for everyone. Something like that to happen on Eid is so sad. It is getting scary round here."

"It is such a shame this has happened on what is supposed to be a special day," another said.

Meanwhile, Councillor Taj Salam of the Bradford Independents urged locals to "maintain law and order in the area" following the incident.
