A person has been killed at an airport in Amsterdam after being sucked into a plane engine as witnesses watched in horror, local media reports.

The individual was reportedly caught in the engine of a departing KLM Cityhopper Embraer E190 at Schiphol Airport.

In a statement, the airport said: "A horrific incident occurred today where a person became trapped in the engine of an aircraft.

"Our thoughts are with the loved ones and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this incident."
