Asylum seekers have been told by police not to harass or abuse women, a Freedom of Information request has revealed.

Officers used a PowerPoint presentation to inform asylum seekers about the key points of "UK culture", including information about women having the same rights as men.

The presentation noted that women "must be treated with respect and courtesy" and "if you harass or abuse any female, you can be arrested".

It added, in a capitalised font, that any kind of violence is "not acceptable".

The asylum seekers were warned that certain swear words could also cause "great insult", even amounting to criminal behaviour in public.

Northamptonshire Police set up the initiative following complaints from the community and parents over young male asylum seekers loitering near a primary school in the county.

Some of the complaints alleged that the asylum seekers were filming.

The presentation warns against taking photos and videos, stating: "Be aware that taking photos and videos of any people without their permission can cause great offence."

Details of the presentation have been revealed just days after a 29-year-old Afghan asylum seeker tried to defend his rape of a 15-year-old Scottish schoolgirl.

Sadeq Nikzad's defence cited cultural differences and a language barrier.

Nikzad arrived in the UK illegally on a small boat in 2023, and his lawyers told the court he had not been educated about cultural differences between the UK and Afghanistan.

He has since been jailed for nine years following the attack in Falkirk town centre.

The news follows more than 1,000 small boat migrants crossing the English Channel illegally on June 20 and 21.

A GB News producer based in Kent filmed as the Border Force catamaran Ranger arrived in Dover harbour, counting 134 migrants as they were led off the boat.

The crossings mean over 18,000 small boat migrants have made the trip across the Channel so far this year.

That number is almost 50 per cent higher than the number of small boat migrants who had crossed at this point last year.
