NextImg:Nick Dunlap not allowed to collect £1.2m prize despite amateur winning PGA Tour event

Amateur golfer Nick Dunlap did the unthinkable on the weekend in holding off pros such as Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas to win on the PGA Tour - but he won't be taking home the £1.2million prize for his victory.

He's become the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson won the Tucson Open 33 years ago.

At 20 years of age, Dunlap also becomes the youngest amateur to win on the PGA Tour since 1910.

He holed a six-foot putt on the last hole to finish 29-under for the tournament and one shot ahead of South Africa's Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

However, Dunlap won't be given the £1.2m prize for winning the tournament due to his status as an amateur.

Instead, Bezuidenhout will take home the winner's cheque and the three players who tied for third will be paid as if they finish joint-second.

Dunlap didn't appear to disheartened at missing out on the huge sum as he was overwhelmed with emotion at his stunning victory.

"It's so cool to be experiencing this as an amateur," he said.

"Whether I made or missed that, if you had told me come Wednesday night that I had a putt to win this tournament, I wouldn't have believed you."

The sophomore plays golf for the University of Alabama and The American Express tournament was just his fourth PGA event having missed the cut on his previous three attempts.

His victory in California though has led to questions whether he plans to turn pro in the immediate future.

However, Dunlap isn't rushing into anything and plans to take his time on whether he will turn professional.

“I have to take a second to let what just happened sink in a little bit,” he said.

“That’s a decision that’s not just about me.

"It affects a lot of people, and obviously, I’m going to try to enjoy this.”
