A neighbour row has erupted in one of the wealthiest parts of London after Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour submitted a retrospective application for a garden shed that neighbours claim breaches previous agreements.

The 79-year-old musician's green outbuilding has drawn formal objections from the Hampstead Hill Gardens Residents' Association, who argue the structure sits too close to boundary fences.

The shed, measuring just under two by three metres, was constructed to replace earlier garden buildings but has prompted complaints about its positioning and visual impact.

Residents whose gardens adjoin Gilmour's property have submitted letters to Camden Council demanding the shed's removal, claiming it differs significantly from what received approval in 2023.

The outbuilding replaces a previous shed and small summerhouse that occupied the garden's rear corner.

According to the retrospective application, the structure has been painted green to reduce visual impact and features traditional construction methods.

The Hampstead Hill Gardens Residents' Association contends the shed now stands approximately two metres nearer to the boundary fence than originally permitted.

"The application should be rejected as the structure now in place is obtrusive, overbearing, and significantly more visually and physically intrusive than what was originally approved or what stood there before," the association stated in its formal objection.

The group maintains the shed should have been erected on the same footprint as the previous structures, as specified in the 2023 planning consent.

The residents' association has called for the structure's immediate dismantling.

"The decision we hope the Council will make is that it is removed as soon as possible to stop the continued harm to neighbourhood amenity," their letter states.

The group warned Camden Council against accepting what they termed a "retrospective rationalisation" of the development.

"We urge the Council to resist being misled by this retrospective rationalisation and to refuse this application," they wrote.

They argued that granting permission would set a dangerous precedent.

"Allowing it would be a signal to all applicants that they can ignore the terms of their permissions," the association's submission concluded.

Individual neighbours have raised additional concerns about the shed's construction and potential purpose.

One resident noted that the shed's proximity to the fence prevents screening with vegetation, stating: "The applicant's garden is long and ours is very short which makes this stand out all the more. You can see why they want the shed at the fence but their gain is our loss."

Another Hampstead Hill Gardens resident questioned the building's intended use.

"I noticed during the construction of the building that extensive foundations were being laid down for a building that claimed to be a mere garden shed," they wrote, adding: "I then subsequently noticed the extensive landscaping around it.

"Both of these facts and its size indicate that the owners may have more ambitious and different uses for the building than that of a garden shed."
