McDonald's is suffering from a global technical malfunction, with diners reporting that they are unable to order food.

The fast food chain has confirmed there was a "system failure" in Japan and asked customers to "wait for a while" for service to be restored.

Social media users have also complained of issues in the UK, Germany Australia, New Zealand, and Austria.

Downdetector, a system used to monitor IT problems in businesses, noted a spike in issues with the McDonald's UK app from around 05:00 GMT on Friday.

A spokesperson from McDonald's in Japan, which operates around 3,000 stores in the country, said: "There is currently a system failure. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and ask that you please wait for a while until the service is restored."

The New York Times reports that McDonald's Hong Kong was also experiencing a "computer system failure" - with mobile ordering and self-ordering kiosks not functioning.

A McDonald's Australia spokesperson said they were also aware of a technology outage impacting its restaurants nationwide and were working to resolve this issue.
