Drivers are being warned of travelling along a major motorway after a collision caused a delivery lorry to overturn, prompting long delays.

The M6 in Staffordshire is closed northbound between J14 (Stafford) and J15 (Stoke on Trent) due to the accident.

Staffordshire Police and other emergency services are at the scene of the accident.

National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance and helping with traffic management.

The overturned lorry on the M6 has caused long delays this morning

The lorry struck and damaged the concrete central reservation barrier and caused a "significant spillage of diesel across both carriageways".

As a result of the spillage, all four lanes of the northbound carriageway and lane four of the southbound carriageway require resurfacing.

Contractors will "plane" three lanes of the northbound carriageway once recovery and clear-up is complete.

This will involve traffic officers and highway maintenance teams removing the top layer of the tarmac.

Once this is completed, the road will be able to reopen, although it will be with reduced speeds until a full resurfacing operation takes place overnight.

Drivers will deal with further delays as lane four of the southbound carriageway will also remain closed throughout the day until resurfacing can take place.
