



Drivers are being warned that a major motorway will be shut for "several hours" as police continue investigations following a serious crash.
The M1 in West Yorkshire is closed southbound between J41 and J40 near Wakefield following a "serious road traffic collision".
National Highways Traffic officers are assisting with traffic management as emergency services assess the scene.
The transport authority has warned that the road is likely to remain closed for "several hours" as investigations take place.

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said: "The southbound M1 around J41 (Carr Gate/East Ardsley) has been closed as emergency services deal with a serious road traffic collision.
"The closure is likely to remain in place for some time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes."
Data from National Highways maps suggests that normal traffic conditions will return at around 1pm, although this could be extended further in the day.
Drivers travelling around West Yorkshire today are set to deal with lengthy delays for the rest of the morning and into the afternoon, with further traffic issues on the A162 to the east of the town.

Congestion on the A1M southbound between J41 and J40 is causing traffic issues and slow-moving traffic on the carriageway.
Long tailbacks with stationary or slow-moving traffic can be seen on the A1M between Junction 41 and Junction 38 north of Doncaster.
Motorists are also dealing with congestion on the southwestern approach to Leeds along the A58 (M).
National Highways has provided diversion routes for motorists travelling along the M1 who may be impacted by the carriageway closure.
