NextImg:Local residents fume after secret plan exposed to put migrants into student flats

Fury has emerged after the Home Office's latest attempt to house illegal immigrants in student flats.

Officials are under pressure to move asylum seekers out of hotels with new plans potentially costing millions of pounds.

On one occasion, the officials attempted to put through a planning application to transform a 247-bed block of flats in Leeds - called Mary Morris House in Headingley - into a place for asylum seekers.

The block is near to the route that runs through the Otley Run pub crawl which draws in thousands of students and other pubgoers every weekend.

The application for the block of flats - owned by a London-based property firm - was submitted a month ago and is due to be decided in October.

However, there is no mention of asylum seekers, how many would be housed there or when they would move in.

It was only when Leeds City Council released a statement which made the intentions of the Home Office clear.

"The Home Office has advised the council that the submission is part of wider central government efforts to reduce the reliance on hotel use for those seeking asylum," the council said.

As part of the planning process, the public are not permitted to make a formal objection to the plan or make any comments.

Leeds locals have reacted with fury and have accused the Government of attempting to solve the hotels crisis in other ways.

Local shop worker Amy Radley, 34, said that putting asylum seekers in Mary Morris House "is not solving the problem of illegal immigration".

"People should not be coming here illegally, and that is what the Government needs to focus on," she told The Sun.

"Headingley is not the right place for them and putting them in student accommodation is just a hotel by another name."

Sara Bejoy, 21, a student nurse living opposite the block, told the outlet that she had "concerns for residents' safety".

"Also, it is so close to the Otley Run, where there are a lot of drunk girls in outfits," she added.

"This could be confusing for immigrants, not knowing the culture, and something bad might happen."

Ms Bejoy said she returns back from work at 11pm and "I would not feel safe".

Charles McAdam, 62, said he was furious about there being no public consultation.

"Local people are going to get no say on this," he told the newspaper.

"It's a done deal and Leeds City Council and the Government are turning a deaf ear to genuine concerns."

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said the plan was a "huge waste of taxpayers' money".

"(It) shows the Government has totally lost control of our borders," he added.

"A new Home Secretary will make no difference to Labour's migrant crisis."

The Home Office said: "Decisions about accommodation are made with careful consideration alongside local authorities, as part of our strategy to reduce dependence on expensive hotel provision and to create a more sustainable and cost-effective asylum system".
