New York Attorney General Letitia James has been indicted by a grand jury on a fraud charge amid her long-running feud with Donald Trump.

The Eastern District of Virginia indicted Ms James on one count after mortgage fraud investigation on Thursday.

It comes amid claims the Trump administration is using the law enforcement powers of the Justice Department to pursue political foes and public figures who once investigated him.

The US President has for months advocated for charging Ms James.

He posted to social media that she was "guilty as hell".

Mr Trump told reporters at the White House that "it looks to me like she's really guilty of something".

"But I really don't know," he said.

Ms James took aim at the US President in a statement, accusing him of "weaponising our justice system".

"He is forcing federal law enforcement agencies to do his bidding," she added.

"All because I did my job as the New York State Attorney General.

"These charges are baseless, and the President's own public statements make clear that his only goal is political retribution at any cost."

US Prosecutor Lindsey Halligan said the case proved "no one is above the law".

"The charges as alleged in this case represent intentional, criminal acts and tremendous breaches of the public's trust," Ms Halligan said.

"The facts and the law in this case are clear.

"We will continue following them to ensure that justice is served."

Ms Halligan previously worked as Mr Trump's attorney and was appointed after Erik Seibert resigned from the case.

Mr Siebert was reportedly sacked after telling the White House there was insufficient evidence to prosecute Ms James.

The New York Attorney General is due in court on October 24.

Ms James led a civil fraud case against Mr Trump and his business which resulted in a $500million fine.

The fine was recently overturned by an appellate court.

Ms James had asked the New York Courts of Appeals - the state's highest court - to reverse its decision.

The US President's legal team had previously said Ms James had a "political crusade" against their client.
