NextImg:Lee Anderson despairs after watching ‘out of touch’ MPs react to Sarah Pochin’s burka question

Reform MP Lee Anderson has blasted MPs for their reaction to Sarah Pochin’s controversial PMQ (Prime Minister’s Question) about the banning of burkas in Britain.

The insurgent party’s newest MP sucked the air out of the Commons when she asked her first ever PMQ with representatives clearly taken aback by what had just been put to Sir Keir Starmer.

Their reaction has been criticised by Lee, who used his GB News show to swipe at leftists in Parliament who reacted with fury.

“I was in the chamber sat next to Sarah”, he said.

“The PM’s answer was awful. He was banging on about spending or something because the man doesn’t have a clue.

“When she asked that question, there were signs, moans, groans and complaints from the opposite benches.

“We had the Lib Dems, the Greens and some of the Gaza independents all groaning. They’re not in touch.

“Any poll would say overwhelmingly that face coverings would be banned.”

Pochin's question sucked the air out of the room as MPs squirmed

Political commentator Andy Twelves challenged the Reform chief whip, saying Pochin used her question to focus on trivial matters rather than something actually important.

“It’s a bizarre, culture war question when there are real issues in this country that Sarah was objectively elected to face”, he said.

“Her by-election win was not on burkas. Do you think the people of Runcorn and Helsby care about the burka rather than their bills?”

Lee put it to Twelves that pro-Gaza independents were unlikely to have been elected as a result of their views on local matters.

He continued: “One of the big concerns in Sarah’s constituency, where I helped campaign, was migrants in hotels.”

Twelves said Lee was bringing up a “totally different” conversation, but the GB News star insisted it was part of the “wider discussion”.

“People are coming from different cultures, not respecting our history, heritage and our culture.”

Pochin’s comments in Parliament have sparked a conversation about the topic but also prompted a debate in Reform UK circles.

Chairman Zia Yusuf said it was “dumb” for Pochin to call on Starmer to ban the burka before announcing his bombshell resignation.

A burka ban was not a Reform UK policy at last year’s general election.

The burka is a one-piece veil worn by some Muslim women that covers the face and body.

Several countries have introduced restrictions around it including France, Denmark and Belgium.

Pochin pointed to Britain’s European partners in her Commons question and asked whether Starmer would be willing to follow their suit.

The Prime Minister said he was “not going to follow her down that line” before swiping at her party leader, Nigel Farage.
