Labour's rebellion against Sir Keir Starmer's stance on Israel has started after three Shadow Ministers tendered their resignations ahead of tonight's landmark ceasefire vote.

Bolton South East MP Yasmin Qureshi, Manchester Gorton MP Afzal Khan and Liverpool Wavertree MP Paula Barker all quit over the "carnage" in the Middle East.

Qureshi said: "The scale of bloodshed in Gaza is unprecedented. Tonight, I will vote for an immediate ceasefire.

"We must call for an end to the carnage to protect innocents lives and end human suffering."

In her letter to the Leader of the Opposition, the 60-year-old expressed her "deep regret" and condemned the "atrocities" committed by Hamas.

Qureshi, who claimed the attack could not justify Israel's response, said: "The situation in Gaza desperately requires an immediate ceasefire to address the humanitarian catastrophe and to advance moves towards a political solution that brings freedom, prosperity and security."

Khan wrote: "The actions we have seen by the Israeli Government in retaliation have been indiscriminate and amounts to the collective punishment of Palestinians."

Barker added: "Israel has the right to defend itself, and to defeat Hamas.

"But it must do so within international law. Self-defence is not a blank cheque."

A number of Labour MPs are expected to vote for the SNP amendment to the King's Speech calling for an immediate ceasefire.

GB News understands there could be as many as ten frontbenchers considering backing the amendment, meaning they would either be forced to quit or be sacked.

Labour MPs are under a three-line whip not to vote in the SNP's amendment.

A party spokesperson yesterday said: "We're not going to be engaging with the party political game playing by the SNP in parliament."

They added today: “This is a whipped vote and every MP knows what the consequence of that means.”

But GB News understands MPs are not likely to have the whip removed if they break the party line on this issue.

A total of 19 Shadow Ministers have publicly backed a ceasefire in Israel and Gaza, as well as 70 backbenchers, breaking with Starmer's stance of calling for "humanitarian pauses".
