Council tax payers in the south of England should pay for better services in the north, according to a leading Red Wall MP.

Jonathan Hinder, Labour MP for Pendle and Clitheroe, said it was unfair that councils, typically in the North of England, where property is cheaper, receive less in council tax revenue.

It comes amid reports that council tax is set to soar by five per cent for the next three years, the fastest rate of increase in two decades, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).

Hinder told GB News' Chopper's Political Podcast: "I've been very vocal about council tax. I want to see it completely reformed.

"He said it was not fair that his "constituents are paying double what some in west London are paying when they own a £200,000 house. This house is worth over a million".

Hinder - a member of the 'blue Labour' group of MPs - added: "Everyone in the House of Commons, everyone in the country knows that is nuts. But this has been allowed to happen over decades with no one wanting to make the difficult decisions on it.

"So I would say to the Government, please, if you want to make our taxation system fairer, to reduce it for the majority of households, which this would then have a look at this.

"The mechanics of it can be discussed. But this kind of attitude of Pendle Council should be able to raise what they can on the basis of this council tax system - which they're locked into - is crazy. Let's make that a lot fairer."

Hinder added: "It's a form of wealth tax. And what I would say is we want to, have as low tax as possible for ordinary people. And we've got this enormous wealth in the country. Could they pay a little bit more tax? Of course they could."
