The Duchess of Edinburgh has represented King Charles III at a commemoration marking three decades since the Srebrenica genocide in Bosnia.

Her Royal Highness attended the 30th anniversary event in Srebrenica today, where she delivered a message from the monarch.

The King expressed his sadness at being unable to attend the commemoration in person.

"I am greatly saddened not to be with you in person today, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide," his message began.

His Majesty acknowledged he was "most touched and grateful" to be able to share his words as attendees paid their respects to victims of the 1995 atrocity.

The King's message directly addressed the international community's role in the tragedy, which has been confirmed as genocide by international courts.

"Many of the individuals responsible are now rightly facing justice, but this does not absolve the rest of us of our duties: both to acknowledge the international community's failure to prevent the horror and to do all we can to ensure it never happens again," he stated.

His Majesty emphasised that whilst some perpetrators have faced justice, this does not diminish the collective responsibility to prevent future atrocities.

The monarch's words underscored the importance of learning from past failures to protect vulnerable populations.

King Charles paid special tribute to the Mothers of Srebrenica in his message.

"I humbly salute the Mothers of Srebrenica, and all who do so much, despite their continuing anguish, to preserve the memory of those who died," he wrote.

King Charles revealed he had previously met survivors and family members of the missing, expressing deep admiration for them.

"It has meant a very great deal to me, in past years, to have met survivors, mothers and family members of the missing, for whom I have such admiration," he stated.

His Majesty praised their remarkable strength in the face of tragedy.

King Charles said: "Their extraordinary courage, compassion and dignity are a lesson to us all, and it is my hope that we may all take inspiration from their incredible resilience under such unbearable circumstances."

The King also recognised those working towards reconciliation across ethnic divides in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"Let us also take inspiration from those who bravely speak out in pursuit of justice and those who dedicate their lives to rebuilding trust between communities for the sake of a better, shared future," he stated.

His Majesty warned against denying or forgetting historical events. "But there can be no shared future when the events of the past are denied or forgotten," he wrote.

The monarch concluded by urging continued efforts to find missing persons and promote understanding.

"Let us honour their memory by standing alongside each and every one of those who work so tirelessly to promote understanding and tolerance between all peoples, of all faiths, nationalities and ethnicities, in the ongoing pursuit of a just and brighter future."
