NextImg:JD Vance to stay with 'friend' David Lammy on family trip to Britain

JD Vance is set to spend a weekend with David Lammy during a family holiday to Britain this summer.

The US Vice President will arrive in the UK on Friday morning with his Usha and their three children for their summer trip to the Cotswolds.

It is expected the trip will begin with a weekend stay at the Foreign Secretary's country residence of Chevening House, alongside Lammy, his wife Nicola Green, and their three children.

Vance is set to stay with Lammy for three nights - and the pair will hold a formal bilateral meeting during this time.

Despite the duo's political differences, Lammy has been open about how they bonded over their working-class upbringings in the past.

While in Rome for the Inauguration Mass of Pope Leo, Vance, Lammy and Rayner "had a couple of drinks", and bonded being "working-class politicians", the Foreign Secretary told The Guardian.

He added: "I had this great sense that JD completely relates to me."

In March, Lammy and his family were invited by Vance to visit the Vice President's Washington residence for several hours.

He joined the VP, a Catholic, for Mass in his home.

After visiting Chevening, Vance will head to the Cotswolds, where he is said to have chosen a discreet period property near Charlbury, some 12 miles northwest of Oxford, for the second leg of his holiday.

While his trip is primarily a personal vacation, he is expected to hold other political meetings whilst he is in the UK - though none have been confirmed at the moment.

Dr James Orr, a Cambridge professor who is a close friend of Vance, said: "I've always had the same response to [people asking], 'Why is he so mean about Europe? Why does he seem to hate us Britons so much?'.

"It's the reverse. He's critical of European leadership and the technocratic elite - not because he hates Europe but precisely because he loves it."

But not everyone in Britain is happy about Vance's planned trip.

An "anti-Donald Trump coalition" of climate protesters, pro-Palestinian demonstrators and trade unions have told the Vice President to prepare for backlash during his holiday.

A spokesman from the UK-based "Stop Trump Coalition" said: "JD Vance is every bit as unwelcome in the UK as Donald Trump.

"We are sure that, even in the Cotswolds, he will find resistance waiting."
