NextImg:Jack Nicklaus, 85, reveals gripe with Rory McIlroy after golf star struggled at PGA Championship

Jack Nicklaus believes Rory McIlroy has 'never corrected' an aspect of his game after the golfer recently struggled at the PGA Championship.

Many had expected the Northern Irishman to add another major to his collection given how he fared at the Masters at Augusta last month.

However, McIlroy was well off the pace at Quail Hollow - with Scottie Scheffler securing glory instead.

Nicklaus, speaking to Sky Sports, has now opened up on the rivalry between the pair.

And the golf legend has complained about McIlroy's technique, expressing a belief he'd have won even more titles throughout his career if he changed things up.

"[I see myself more in] Scotty," he said.

"First of all, Rory, the ball gets away from Rory right to left. Always has his career.

"He hasn't corrected it, but he still has had a great career with it. But could he have had a better career if he'd gone a little bit the other way? I don't know.

"Maybe yes, maybe no. But Scottie has learned at a fairly young age that keeping the ball in play [is key].

"He's long, he's certainly long enough, as long as the rest of the guys. But he doesn't try to be.

"He makes sure that he puts it in play so that he's got a second shot to play.

"I think that wins golf tournaments more often than hitting it over the top of trees and so forth."

While McIlroy struggled at the PGA Championship, his sensational victory over the Masters will be remembered as one of the greatest sporting moments in modern times.

The 36-year-old had previously gone over a decade without securing another major.

But McIlroy was imperious as he fended off competition from Justin Rose. Nicklaus believes it was a huge moment - and also opened up on what he told the Briton following his sensational achievement.

"I think that getting over the line and winning The Masters is probably more important than winning the Grand Slam," added the 85-year-old.

"I think that The Masters has been a bugaboo for him for 10 years.

"And I think that once he got The Masters behind him, the reward was the Grand Slam, so I'm very happy for him.

"It was great golf and I dropped him a note and said a guy who makes four double-bogeys and still has enough talent to overcome that is pretty special."
