Iran "successfully" launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday, according to an Iranian MP, just months after Donald Trump's bombing raid on the country.

Speaking to state broadcaster IRIB, Iranian parliamentarian Mohsen Zanganeh said: "Two nights ago, we tested one of the country's most advanced missiles, which had not been tested so far, and it was successful.

"I want to say under these circumstances, we are conducting a security test of an intercontinental missile."

Residents across Tehran, the capital city, and other nearby cities took to social media to describe seeing arcs of smoke in the sky, now suspected to have been the missile.

It is understood the tests took place just outside the capital.

Just months ago Donald Trump ordered the bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities in what he called a "spectacular military success".

At the time, Iran and Israel were engaged in the so-called "12 day war" and exchanging strikes.

Having originally announced the American strikes on social media, the President later said: "Iran's nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated.

"Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace.

"If they do not, future attacks would be far greater and a lot easier."

One month after the end of its war with Israel, Tehran conducted a suborbital test using a satellite launch vehicle.

A 2019 report from the US Defence Intelligence Agency declared that expertise in space launch vehicles "can be used as a test bed for developing an ICBM", however Iran continues to claim its space programme is peaceful.

Some Iranian politicians are pushing for a harder stance against the UN after European countries triggered a "snapback mechanism".

This means "targeted sanctions focused on tackling Iranian nuclear proliferation" are set to return on September 28.

As a result, on Saturday, Ahmad Naderi, a Member of the Parliament's presiding board, said: "Ultimately testing the atomic bomb is the only option that can spare Iran the fate of Iraq and Libya.

"Experience has shown that countries without nuclear deterrence eventually become victims of invasion or regime change.
