A huge fire has broken out at an airport in the US after two planes smashed into each other on the runway.

Thick plumes of black smoke were seen towering over Kalispell City Airport in Montana after the crash.

Eyewitness reports revealed how a "loud explosion" was heard at the scene before fire spread across the tarmac.

Images from Kalispell, far away from the airport, showed how the smoke could be seen across the city.

The two planes involved were small aircraft - with at least four people aboard one, and no passengers on the other.

Two people were said to have been treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The Kalispell Police Department, Flathead County Sheriff's Office and local firefighters all rushed to the tarmac after the crash, with a probe launched into exactly what caused it.

The airport was later temporarily shut down.

Congressman Ryan Zinke said his staff were on-site following the incident.

"From what we understand, no one was injured, praise God. We will be assisting local authorities and the airport in any way we can as they handle this unfortunate accident," he added.

It follows a deadly small plane crash at Southend Airport in the UK last month.

Inquests have now been opened into the deaths of four people who were killed when a medical transport plane smashed into the ground.

Witnesses at the time described the "horror" of seeing smoke rise over the airport.

One, nearby resident Penny, told ITV: "It was sickening; it was an awful, horrible feeling to know that had actually happened."

"But then you start thinking what if? What if it had spiralled and gone into the houses? What if it had been a bigger plane? You just feel helpless, there's nothing you can do. Just pray for everyone."
