Labour-run Birmingham City Council is offering asylum seekers money off leisure activities including trampolining.

The local authority, which declared itself effectively bankrupt in 2023, is giving migrants discounts through its Passport to Leisure scheme.

Asylum seekers can receive 25 per cent off a range of instructor-led courses, including gymnastics, golf, football, trampolining and martial art lessons, according to the council's website.

Swimming sessions at council-run pools are also offered at a 20 per cent discount.

The scheme also includes £1 tickets for children at Aston Villa football games when accompanied by an adult.

Trips to the city's Botanical Gardens and its main theatre, the Birmingham Hippodrome, are also cheaper.

Migrants can also get money off exhibitions at Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery.

Other residents who can access the discounts include full-time students, carers, children in care, people aged 60 or over and those receiving certain benefits.

Birmingham City Council declared itself 'bankrupt' almost two years ago

Birmingham City Council declared effective bankruptcy in September, 2023, by issuing a section 114 notice, which prevents spending other than on essential services, after identifying equal pay liabilities estimated at £760million.

Its bin workers who are part of the Unite union are currently in their seventh month of industrial action in a dispute over pay.

An all-out strike has been ongoing since March, leading to the pile up of rubbish on the city's streets.

Birmingham is however not the only council offering up discounts to asylum seekers.

Wandsworth Borough Council is also giving migrants money off activities, including pantomime tickets and pottery classes.

They can also get a half-price reduction on annual allotment fees and annual fishing permits to use at several green spaces across the borough.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp posted to X in response to the discounts offered by Wandsworth Council: "It’s a slap in the face to hard-pressed taxpayers who are being forced by a Labour council to subsidise perks for illegal immigrants crossing the channel who then claim asylum.

"At a time when people are struggling to make ends meet thanks to Labour’s tax rises, this woke council is funnelling public money to illegal immigrants.

"It’s an insult to every struggling family in the country. Labour has the wrong priorities."
