France has temporarily halted its Palestinian "refugee" scheme amid a terrorism row.

Authorities have launched a probe into how a student who allegedly shared antisemitic material online was allowed into the country through the scheme, and it has been paused as a result.

The refugee, a female student from the Gaza Strip, will have to leave the country after her university in the northern city of Lille revoked her accreditation.

Lille's general prosecutor said a judicial probe had been opened into her for allegedly trying to "justify terrorism" and "justify a crime against humanity".

Her posts included an image of Adolf Hitler and words appearing to call for the death of Jews.

"No evacuation of any kind will take place until we have drawn conclusions from this investigation," France's Foreign Minister went on to reveal on Friday.

Jean-Noel Barrot confirmed that Palestinians already in France will be "subject to a new check" after the "failures that brought this young woman here".

Now, anyone who has come to France from Gaza under the scheme - around 500 people in total - will be screened for a second time.

The university, Sciences Po, said it "decided to cancel this student's planned registration at our establishment" after officials got involved.

Since her July 11 arrival, the student had lived with the university's director while she waited for permanent accommodation.

She had even been handed a scholarship for "academic excellence" after "security checks".

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau labelled her post "unacceptable and concerning" as he blasted: "Hamas propagandists have no place in our country."

His colleague Barrot added: "A Gazan student making antisemitic remarks has no place in France.

"The screening carried out by the relevant departments of the ministries concerned clearly did not work."

But on July 24, the pair's boss Emmanuel Macron declared that France would recognise Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Sir Keir Starmer then followed in his footsteps, before Canada's Mark Carney did the same.
