Four pedestrians were rushed to hospital after being struck by a car on Shaftesbury Avenue in London's West End during the early hours of Christmas Day.

One victim remains in life-threatening condition following the incident, which occurred at 00:45hrs when a vehicle was reported driving on the wrong side of the road.

The Metropolitan Police responded to the scene after receiving reports of a road traffic collision on the central London street.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy said: "Officers responded quickly to this report, working closely with City of London Police to arrest a man within minutes."

Police have established multiple cordons at the scene, with several areas remaining closed for investigation throughout Christmas Day.

Detectives are rapidly progressing their investigation into the incident, which is believed to have stemmed from an altercation at a nightclub.

Police say the suspect became involved in the dispute at the venue before getting into his vehicle and mounting the pavement.

The collision occurred in one of London's busiest entertainment districts, with Shaftesbury Avenue home to numerous nightclubs and late-night venues.

Police have confirmed this was an isolated incident and not terrorism-related.

The Metropolitan Police are urging any witnesses to come forward with information about the Christmas morning collision.

Members of the public can contact police on 101 or post information to @MetCC, quoting reference CAD 233 of 25 December.
