NextImg:Fifa president Gianni Infantino releases statement after Liverpool parade ends with car ramming horror

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has issued a statement after a car collided with a number of fans on the streets of Liverpool after their trophy parade on Monday evening.

A spectacular day ended in horror on Monday evening in Liverpool when, at around 6 pm, a black SUV collided with dozens of Liverpool fans who were out to celebrate their side’s triumphs on the pitch this year.

Merseyside Police announced that a 53-year-old white male, who is believed to be the driver of the vehicle, was arrested at the scene.

At the time of writing, 47 people sustained injuries as a result of the collision, with 27 being taken to the hospital.

It includes four children that are being treated in hospital.

Fifa President Gianni Infantino has issued a statement, offering his thoughts and players to those who have been affected by the incident.

The 55-year-old said: “Football stands together with Liverpool FC and all fans of the club following the horrific incident that has taken place during the trophy parade in the city.

“From everyone at FIFA, we offer our thoughts and prayers to all those affected."

Both Liverpool and the Premier League have also released statements on the tragedy.

“We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening,” a statement from the club said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.

“We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”

The Premier League said: “Everyone at the Premier League is shocked by the appalling events in Liverpool this evening, and our heartfelt thoughts go out to all those injured and affected.

“We have been in contact with Liverpool FC and have offered our full support following this serious incident.”


Liverpool legends Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard also took to social media to offer their thoughts and prayers to anyone who had been affected.

"Devastating end to the day.......just pray everyone is okay,” Carragher said online.

Eyewitnesses told GB News Liverpool Lime Street station had been shut and "[there were] tonnes of police and ambulance came rushing in, it was mad."

Another eyewitness told GB News: "I saw a car ram through people and pedestrians then started banging on the car like 'what are you doing?

"Then the driver reversed and sped up forward and mowed down more people as pedestrians, police and ambulances started chasing after the car.

"It happened five feet away from me, I’m so grateful I managed to avoid it, terrifying to think what could have happened."

Deputy chief constable Jenny Sims said they believe it to be an isolated incident, and is not being treated as terrorism.
