Sick of buffering ruining the cliffhanger in your latest boxset binge-watch or the pivotal last-minute goal?
EE has announced — a new solution that it believes will transform the streaming experience. Whether you're watching on Prime Video, Netflix, TNT Sports via discovery+, YouTube, or a Twitch.tv live stream, EE's Stream Mode is designed to intelligently prioritise any streaming apps on your home Wi-Fi network.
According to EE, enabling Stream Mode means you'll be able to enjoy the big match, boxsets, or stream live to your followers without a stutter, buffer, or any dropouts — even when everyone in your household is online.
The new feature, , is enabled with a toggle inside the EE app. Once switched on, EE will prioritise streaming apps above other demands on your broadband connection, keeping your favourite shows running smoothly, even on a busy home network.
For creators and gamers, Stream Mode also helps uploads to platforms like Twitch and YouTube, making live streaming and content sharing faster and more reliable.
EE says its blistering-fast Wi-Fi 7 router unlocks 2x faster speeds than Wi-Fi 6 technology, which is the standard used by most other UK broadband suppliers. If the BT-owned firm fails to deliver a minimum speed of 100Mbps in every room of your house — you'll get £100 back. Its speediest 1.6Gbps plan comes with WiFi Enhancer service at no extra cost too
In a nutshell, your broadband connection is like a motorway — with the more traffic on the road at the same time, the more congested and slower your overall connection will become.
While even the slowest broadband connection, usually measured in the average download speed, can handle a livestream of a football match, a brand-new boxset on Netflix, or a video call with friends and family ...if you're doing a couple of these tasks at the same time, that's when you'll start to see some issues.
You might not even be conscious of the background tasks slowing down your network. If your phone is backing up data to the cloud, an important software update is downloading to your PC, or you have home security systems like Ring video doorbells or smart thermostats from Nest or Hive ...these processes will all take away available bandwidth.
For busy households with slower connections, it doesn't take long before these smaller tasks start to build up and your home broadband speed starts to suffer seriously.
Openreach engineers are able to connect some 85,000 new premises to full-fibre broadband every single week, unlocking faster download and upload speeds and a more reliable connection
OPENREACH PRESS OFFICEIf multiple people are watching video, streaming music, radio or podcasts, backing up photos to the cloud, installing new apps or software updates, making video calls ...you could quickly see a dip in broadband speed.
Like a motorway, you can expect to see some dips in speed at peak times as more people try to connect to the internet at the same time. Ofcom data shows the biggest dip in performance tends to be between 8 –10 pm, with most people only able to access 92% of their maximum download speed.
Older copper cables tend to suffer more than full-fibre connections during these high-traffic periods.
EE's Stream Mode identifies what each device is trying to do online and then prioritise those trying to stream video. It joins the existing Game Mode and Work Mode options that form EE's .
This optional add-on, which can be added to any full-fibre broadband connection via the EE mobile app or website, unlocks all three of these new modes. You can activate any of the these three modes at any time — or even run all three simultaneously, so the whole household gets the best connection for their specific needs.
Unlike some broadband providers, which limit priority settings to a single device, EE’s Wi-Fi Enhancer add-on will intelligently manages bandwidth across multiple devices and differentiates by activity type, ensuring that streaming, gaming and work traffic each get the bandwidth and performance these tasks need, exactly when they need it, while the rest of the home remains uninterrupted.
Whether streaming in 4K, joining a crucial work call, or gaming online, EE says its Wi-Fi Enhancer will deliver "seamless performance across every corner of the home".
