A Warwickshire family have been left fuming after their summer holiday was ruined by an insect infestation.

Stephen Wheeldon, 49, forked out more than £2,400 to take his wife and two daughters on an EasyJet holiday for seven nights at the Basilica Holiday Resort in Paphos, Cyprus.

The father-of-two was left disgusted after discovering hordes of cockroaches in three separate apartments during their trip, claiming that some of the insects measured "a couple of inches long".

After arriving in Cyprus on July 24, Mr Wheeldon said the family had been given the "wrong room" for their self-catering holiday.

The family had booked a two-bedroom apartment through easyJet - but were instead given a single room with just two single beds.

After the hotel provided them with an additional room for their 13-year-old daughter, Mr Wheeldon discovered that the new accommodation had cockroaches crawling across the floor of the shower.

The 49-year-old said: "I'd actually never seen a cockroach in my life before that."

After bringing the insects' presence to the hotel staff, Mr Wheeldon was offered another room on a separate floor for his daughter to sleep in.

To the family's horror, this room was also home to a host of cockroaches.

After raising the issue once again, the father-of-two was simply told by hotel staff that "cockroaches are everywhere".

He said: "It wasn't a good response really, they shouldn't have been everywhere.

"Thank goodness I hadn't gone all-inclusive - because they would be in the restaurant."

On the final night of their stay, Mr Wheeldon claimed the family saw cockroaches in the room where he was sleeping with his wife and other daughter.

He said: "Last night, we never slept because you could feel things crawling over you.

"I went and spoke to reception and said, look, it's a bit late at this point, there's not much you can do, I grant that, but it's not good enough.

"To be honest, it didn't seem an unusual sort of circumstance to them, because they didn't seem that bothered, to be honest.

"I spoke to EasyJet on the first call, when the cockroaches were first found in my daughter's original room, and they offered me a £60 voucher towards my next holiday, which really isn't of any value whatsoever."

An EasyJet spokesman said: "As soon as Mr Wheeldon reached out to us, we arranged a room change for him and his family to help improve their stay.

"We've also been in direct contact to offer our sincere apologies, a partial refund and a gesture of goodwill."
