Eamonn Holmes has revealed a memorable encounter with Princess Anne at Edinburgh airport, describing her as "the hardest-working royal of all."

Speaking on GB News, Eamonn recounted boarding a private plane on a "stormy night" when he spotted the Princess Royal on an adjacent aircraft.

His comments came as King Charles announced the decommissioning of the Royal Train, highlighting how working royals like Princess Anne rely on various forms of transport for their extensive duties.

King Charles decided to scrap the Royal Train after 156 years of service, with Buckingham Palace confirming the historic carriages will be decommissioned before March 2027.

Speaking on GB News, Eamonn said: "People who are important, like the Princess Royal, Anne, she travels a lot.

"She works a lot. She's the hardest-working royal of all. And she just doesn't magically get around.

"I remember one night, 10.30 pm in Edinburgh, and it was a stormy, stormy night. I was boarding a private plane, and she was on the one beside me. So it was just our two planes going out, and I thought it is just me and Anne."

Former royal butler Grant Harrold said: "I've travelled with Princess Anne as well, actually, even coming up to do this programme on occasions.

"Sometimes she's even on the same train as myself, so she doesn't even use the royal train. She'll quite happily just use the normal train like everyone else."

Ellie Costello said: "Well, she's great, isn't she?"

Two new helicopters, which run on as much sustainable aviation fuel as possible, are thought to be the preferred and more efficient form of transport for members of The Royal Family.

The Prince of Wales is said to fully support the decision to decommission the Royal Train.

Queen Elizabeth and the late Duke of Edinburgh were very fond of the Royal Train, which was decorated and furnished to meet their needs.

The train will continue operating until its maintenance contract expires in March 2027, ending a tradition that began when Queen Victoria first travelled by rail from Slough to London Paddington in 1842.

The Royal Train comprises nine carriages that can be attached to commercial locomotives, with the newest dating back to 1986.

Despite its prestigious history stretching back to 1869 when Queen Victoria commissioned special coaches, the train was used just twice in the past year at a cost of nearly £90,000.

One journey took King Charles from London to Yorkshire and then to a station near his Highgrove home for £33,147, while another trip from Highgrove to Burton upon Trent and back to London cost £44,842.
