US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are set to meet in Washington on Monday.

It will mark the first time President Zelensky will set foot on US soil since their last Oval Office meeting descended into an extraordinary row over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In February, Zelensky and Trump met in Washington to negotiate a possible peace deal between Putin and Ukraine, where the US President told Zelensky he is "gambling with World War 3" and that the Ukrainian leader is "not in a good position right now".

The winter spat was triggered after Zelensky told Trump's Vice President JD Vance that America "does not feel" the consequences of Russia's invasion due to their "nice ocean", but suggested that the nation will "feel it in the future".

Infuriated by the remark, Trump interjected Zelensky and warned him not to "dictate what we are going to feel", declaring that Ukraine "does not have the cards right now".

Trump said: "We're going to feel very good and we have very strong influence. You're right now not in a very good position, you've allowed yourself to be in a very bad position. You're not in a good position. You don't have the cards right now with us. You're gambling with the lives of millions of people. You're gambling with World War Three. You're gambling with World War Three."

Zelensky's announcement that he will visit the US again comes just hours after a peace deal in Ukraine had failed to be agreed upon following three hours of talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Despite the lack of a deal in place, the US President said that the meeting was "extremely productive" and the pair had "made headway".

The Russian leader concluded the press conference by suggesting the next round of talks could be held in Moscow.

After the meeting was over, Mr Putin warned European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky not to interfere in the "emerging progress".

He said: “We expect that Kyiv and European capitals will perceive all this in a constructive manner and will not create any obstacles, will not make attempts to disrupt the emerging progress through provocations and behind-the-scenes intrigues".

The Russian leader also warned that for the war in Ukraine to come to an end, Russia's concerns must be considered.

He said: “The situation in Ukraine has to do with the fundamental threats to our security.

“To consider all legitimate concerns of Russia and to reinstate a just balance of security in Europe and in the world on the whole.

"I would like to hope that the agreement that we’ve reached together will help us bring closer to that goal and will pave the path towards peace in Ukraine."

Despite a firm peace deal not being reached, Mr Trump said that it was "an extremely productive meeting" and "many points were agreed to".

President Zelensky wrote on social media: "We had a long and substantive conversation with POTUS. We started with one-on-one talks before inviting European leaders to join us. This call lasted for more than an hour and a half, including about an hour of our bilateral conversation with President Trump.

"Ukraine reaffirms its readiness to work with maximum effort to achieve peace. President Trump informed about his meeting with the Russian leader and the main points of their discussion. It is important that America’s strength has an impact on the development of the situation. We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia.

"Ukraine emphasizes that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this.

"On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation. It is important that Europeans are involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America.

"We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security. We continue to coordinate our positions with all partners. I thank everyone who is helping."
