Punk singer Bobby Vylan has come under fire for fronting a campaign calling for the expulsion of Israeli football clubs and players from playing on British or European soil.

Bobby Vylan, whose real name is Pascal Robinson-Foster, has starred in a video promoting the "Game Over Israel" campaign.

In it, he said: “Now is your time to put pressure on the Football Association, the European federations that represent you and your countries that the Israel national team, the local teams and the players themselves never set foot on UK or European pitches.”

Iranian state media outlet Press TV has thrown its support behind the movement spearheaded by the Ipswich-born singer.

If successful, 10 Israeli national team players at European clubs would be banned from setting foot on pitches across the continent.

This includes Tottenham Hotspur winger Manor Solomon, who is currently on loan at Spanish side Villarreal.

Any such ban would also expel Israeli clubs from competing in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

The campaign comes just weeks before Premier League side Aston Villa are due to host Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League group stage.

Last week, pro-Gaza independent MP Ayoub Khan called on the Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy to cancel the fixture on November 6, citing alleged concerns over "public safety and community harmony."

Mr Khan pointed towards the clashes between Maccabi Tel Aviv fans and pro-Palestine mobs in Amsterdam last year.

The MP said: "I've started a petition to boycott Maccabi Tel Aviv. There is no space for violence or any thugs to come into Aston, or indeed Birmingham."

The boycott of Israeli players and clubs has also been backed by former UN human rights lawyer Craig Mokhiber, who said: “I don’t know anything about football... but I do know about the cruelty of colonialism.”

Labour MP Luke Akehurst slammed Bobby Vylan for his role with Game Over Israel.

He said: “It’s entirely fitting that this pernicious campaign should be fronted by [Bobby] Vylan, a man who peddles hate speech, and promoted by Press TV, the antisemitic mouthpiece of the brutal regime in Tehran.

"It should be treated with the contempt it deserves.”

Shadow Culture Secretary Nigel Huddleston said: “Football should rise above politics. Britain has a proud tradition of defending democratic principles, free expression and fair play.

"Banning Israel from international football would punish athletes and fans rather than promote peace.

“The campaign fronted by Bob Vylan is outrageous. It promotes divisive and inflammatory rhetoric that crosses so many lines.

"No one should be engaging with this hateful diatribe.”
