Daniel Craig has broken his silence over Amazon's takeover of the James Bond franchise, expressing unwavering support for long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson.

"My respect, admiration and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished," Craig said in a statement.

The former 007 actor added to The Hollywood Reporter: "I wish Michael a long, relaxing (and well-deserved) retirement and whatever ventures Barbara goes on to do, I know they will be spectacular and I hope I can be part of them."

Amazon MGM Studios has gained creative control of the James Bond franchise, following a landmark deal with Eon Productions.

The agreement marks a historic shift for the 007 series, which has been controlled by the Broccoli family since Dr No in 1962.

Eon Productions, run by Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for over 60 years since Albert "Cubby" Broccoli's death, will become co-owners with Amazon MGM Studios.

The deal represents a significant change in the franchise's six-decade history of family-led production.

Wilson announced his departure from producing Bond films after nearly 60 years, stating: "I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects."

Broccoli also revealed plans to pursue other ventures, saying: "My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli."

She added: "With the conclusion of No Time To Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects."

Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, emphasised the company's commitment to the franchise's legacy.

"Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment," Hopkins said.

He expressed gratitude to Albert R Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing Bond to cinemas worldwide, and to Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their "unyielding dedication" to the franchise.

"We are honoured to continue this treasured heritage," Hopkins added.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has taken to social media to engage with fans about the franchise's future, asking followers: "Who'd you pick as the next Bond?"

The question has sparked thousands of responses, with Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and James McAvoy emerging as fan favourites.

No official announcement has been made regarding who will replace Daniel Craig, who last portrayed the spy in 2021's No Time to Die.

Amazon's involvement with Bond began in 2022 when it acquired MGM, including rights to distribute 007 films.

The latest deal, expected to close in 2025, is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

Meanwhile, an Austrian businessman, Josef Kleindienst, has filed for trademark cancellation in UK and European intellectual property offices.

Kleindienst, who is developing The Heart of Europe island off Dubai's coast, seeks to use the James Bond name and 007 trademark.
