Nothing has changed in Aldershot a year on from the riots and if anything, things have got worse, a local resident has told GB News.

Jez spoke to GB News National Reporter Jack Carson about how tensions in the community remain a year after civil unrest.

Violent scenes erupted in August 2024 after three young girls were murdered at a dance class in Southport.

Several arrests were made when hundreds gathered outside a hotel in Aldershot to voice dismay.

Hampshire police and crime commissioner (PCC) Donna Jones said the demonstration became a “mob-type” protest with one officer suffering a minor injury.

Jez told GB News: “Nothing has changed. We’ve been protesting up there for two years now and if anything, it has got worse.

“We try and protest twice a month. You’ve just got to look around the town. There’s lots of illegal men hanging around.

“If you asked the women in the town, 80 per cent of them would say they don’t feel safe when they are walking around the town.

“We’ve asked what accommodation these people are being put into and we never get an answer from the council or the MP. We’re pretty certain people are being housed in flats in the town but people won’t answer our questions.

“Surely governments and councillors are there to help us and answer questions locals have to ask?”

Asked by Jack about the Government’s strategy to “smash” the people smuggling gangs facilitating the illegal small boat crossings, Jez quipped Prime Minister Keir Starmer “couldn’t smash an egg”.

He added: “When he opens his mouth and his lips are moving, you know untruths are coming out.

“He’s not said one thing about this that I can believe. I sit there and watch in disbelief every night and get angrier and angrier.

“Your channel [GB News] is the only one that talks about this. It’s time for the man to go.”

The Prime Minister has centred his policy for tackling the soaring levels of illegal migration around ‘smashing’ the people smuggling gangs.

He announced a new pilot scheme last month that will see migrants arriving in small boats returned to France.

The ‘one in, one out’ deal means arrivals would be returned to France and in exchange the UK would take an equivalent number of asylum seekers, subject to security checks.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the pilot scheme would act as a deterrent for those seeking to cross the Channel on small boats.

The Home Office said in response to housing asylum seekers: “The Government is reducing expensive hotel use as part of a complete overhaul of the asylum system.

“From over 400 asylum hotels open in summer 2023, costing almost £9 million a day, there are now less than 210, and we want them all closed by the end of this Parliament.

“We continue to work closely with police and community partners across the country and discuss any concerns they have.

“The security of the local communities within which hotels are located will always be our first priority.”
