Conservative activist Charlie Kirk is understood to have been "shot in the neck" during an event at Utah Valley University.

Witnesses say "shots were fired" as event goers were heard screaming as he started to conduct a Q & A session with students.

Footage posted online shows crowds of people running away from the scene.

Campus police have confirmed that a shot was fired at the US conservative activist, according to the BBC.

JD Vance took to social media following the incident: "Say a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and a young father."

Senator for Utah, Mike Lee also posted on X saying: "I am tracking the situation at Utah Valley University closely.

"Please join me in praying for Charlie Kirk and the students gathered there."

Mr Kirk published a post on social media just minutes before the alleged shooting.

He wrote at 2.23pm EST: "WE. ARE. SO. BACK.

"Utah Valley University is FIRED UP and READY for the first stop back on the American Comeback Tour."
